With much respect to the rich tradition of Japanese ceramic art, specifically the technique of Kurinuki. The practice of carving away clay to create unique forms has a long history in Japanese ceramics and is closely tied to the idea of bringing out the natural beauty of the clay itself.
This approach to creation emphasizes the importance of respecting the inherent qualities of materials and letting them guide the creative process.
The Hand-carved Collection re-imagines traditional techniques to craft larger scaled, unique items that blend old and new, inspired by Japanese concepts. The project tells the story of a group of objects that transcends from the boundaries of form and function and highlights the versatility and adaptability of traditional methods to new and exciting forms.
Each piece in this collection represents the unique and unrepeatable nature of life and reflects the importance of embracing our differences. The neutral tones of the glazes used reflect the serenity and calmness found in nature and create a harmonious unity between each piece..
With this collection, I sought to build upon this philosophy by exploring the relationship between modern design and the materials limitation.
Each piece in the collection embodies a balance between structure and spontaneity, with textured surfaces and organic shapes that evoke the rugged beauty of the natural world.
